Setting Intentions for 2017

I’m not big on setting New Year’s resolutions. I think because it adds a certain amount of pressure on you. Instead I try to look back at things that I think I did well in the previous year and how I accomplished them. My goal for 2017 are straightforward: find simple, small ways to be healthier and happier. It sounds like a hefty goal but the way I look at it, there are tons of small decisions and choices we make each and every day that can help accomplish my goals.

Intention: Live Healthier

For the health portion, my wife and I have been on a steady kick of packing healthy lunches and snacks for the day. Normally I drink about 70oz of coffee each day… I don’t even think I’m exaggerating because I use this tumbler which helps me keep track. Instead, I’ve tried cutting that down to about 45oz and replaced the rest with green tea. Introducing safe and healthy supplements to my daily routine has also already helped me feel so much better. And my fitness goal is to ensure I get to the gym at least 4 times a week. I’ve also been focusing on incorporating new elements to my workout–taking time to stretch before and after has been key! Already feeling healthier and it hasn’t even been two weeks.

Intention: Be Happier

The happiness portion for me can come from almost anywhere. It could be something as simple as listening to more music I enjoy. Or spending time with people who enhance my life as opposed to detract. Even buying things that are not only useful but also beautiful. All of these little things make me happy. My goal is to take time each day to do something for myself that makes me happy. Simple right?

Intention: Get Organized

One piece, and anyone who knows me can attest to it, is that I find joy in being organized and productive. If I spend an entire day lounging without accomplishing something as simple as making the bed I can’t handle it. One way I’m combatting that this year is getting in the habit of note-taking. I’m huge on lists so these Word. notebooks are perfect. I used to use a planner but I found that it took way too much time to keep up to date. The Word. notebooks offer up their own, very simple method of bulleted list-making. Space for a bullet, you circle it if it’s important. If you’ve started on it you slash one line through it and once it’s complete you slash another to make an “X”. Simple and effective.

They come in a variety of gorgeous designs which also makes me happy (who doesn’t love good-looking things?) and they’re small enough to carry around in a bag, jacket or pants pocket. I’ve gotten in the habit of having one for work, one for personal items (bills, home items, etc.) and one for Brick&Vine. It’s really helped me get a handle on life. Simply writing things down helps me remember things, plus I feel accomplished once I’ve been able to full “X” out a bullet.
