“I Am Loved”

There’s really nothing quite like the love you have for your child. People describe having a kid as living with your heart outside your body and, OMG is that one hundred percent true. There’s nothing you wouldn’t do for your child.

And the thing about being a parent is that you do so much for your child and it’s all without anything in return. Sort of. You do so much for them–change them, bathe them, feed them, play with them, etc. And it’s not like they’re doing anything for you necessarily. You wouldn’t have a relationship like that with anyone else. You wouldn’t have a friend who you do absolutely everything for, essentially just doing anything to keep them alive and functioning, without some sort of expectation. But with a child, it’s completely different.

Those moments when your daughter climbs up into your lap. Or wraps her arms around you and gives you a voluntary hug. And side note, Mila gives these hugs where she rubs and pats your back while she’s hugging you and you just melt. Or those moments when she’s goofy and silly and you see some of your personality in her but also see how she’s this amazing little human that’s completely her own person. Ugh, guys, it’s too much. That’s how she expresses her love and it’s beyond worth every second of hard work.

And all I want for her is to be happy and know that her mom and I love her so freaking much. For her to always feel safe and happy knowing that she is loved by so many people.

Helzberg Diamonds recently challenged me to write about a loved one and the concept surrounding their “I Am Loved” buttons. When Barnett Helzberg Jr. proposed to Shirley Bush in 1967, the love he had made him think… Everyone should feel loved. This idea inspired the “I Am Loved” lapel button along with ads featuring Helzberg Jr.’s own words, “Buy her a diamond or give her a button, but in any case, tell her she’s loved.”

And the concept expands farther than romantic love. And I immediately thought about the concept of being a parent. Mila’s mom and I always talk about how we hope she knows how much we love her. And although she’s still little, it’s something we hope we can show her as she continues to grow and get older.

We could all be a little more loving. And we could all express our love for our loved ones. Tell someone you love them today friends!
