My wife and I moved into our home about 3.5 years ago. When we did it, it had been completely renovated–I’m talking bathrooms, kitchen, roof, plumbing… You name it, it had been redone. So when we moved in we had this brand spanking new house all shiny and pretty. And while we bought a few new pieces, all of our old furniture came with it. We had bought an inexpensive sofa when we lived at our apartment that definitely worked in our living room but we started to realize it wasn’t working for our needs.
It became especially apparent when my wife was pregnant. She proclaimed it was the most uncomfortable thing she’d ever had to sit on. And so the need for a new sofa became an even bigger reality.
Now, let’s go back a step or two first so you can truly appreciate the need for a great sofa. First off, everyone loves a good sofa–it’s where you sit down, kick back and relax after a long day. But in our house it became especially important. Our house is about 1,300 square feet. When we renovated we opened up the living space so when you walk into our house, you enter right into our living room, dining room and kitchen. It’s one big open space with some bedrooms and bathrooms that jut out of each other end.
So when you walk in, you meet the sofa. So it better be some sofa, right?
I partnered with Apt2B to center our whole house around a new sectional that’s made our living room more comfortable and cohesive. We’ve got a big family and a new baby so there’s always visitors filtering in and out. It’s also got this expansive (and comfy) chaise that our dog, Rosie, has commandeered. But it’s big enough that we can all share it.
And that brings me to the best part of the sofa–it’s kid and pet friendly. We have so many nieces and nephews, a baby that likes to drool and spit up all the time, and a dog that sheds like no tomorrow. Needless to say, this Apt2B couch has been a Godsend. Especially since our last one went out the door with so many baby stains on it. And Mila was only two months old so it was sort of shocking. Maybe a story for another day. Probably not.
We especially love how the light color plays off some of the darker tones in the room. We liked the look of darker leather sectionals, but they never seemed to play nice with our TV unit. Fun fact, the TV unit is actually an old dresser that was left in the garage in our house. Not sure, but it has to be from either the sixties or seventies. We just cleaned it up and moved it in–love it’s weathered charm in contrast to the clean lines of the Apt2B sofa.
And that pretty much sums up our house style. My wife is a big boho fan and loves anything crocheted, colorful or dripping in fringe. I prefer a slightly cleaner look so the room really was a combination of our different styles. And that was important because we both have to enjoy the space. We spend a ton of time there so it had to be functional but also feel like a space we can both enjoy.
The finishing touches and knick knacks are in a constant state of flux. One day these succulents sit here, the next they move to the bookshelf. But the overall layout always stays the same because it’s sort of the only way the room works. All centered around a television. And let me tell you, this family isn’t cutting out TV anytime soon.
Dining Room
Our dining room is one of my favorite rooms–it used to be an extra bedroom that we took the walls down, turned the closet into a bar because duh and painted it this bold peacock color. It’s one of my favorite spaces. And I love that it’s right off the living room. When people are over, our house is great because you’re all in one open space. You can be making a drink at the bar, and still be talking to someone on the sofa.
It all turned out perfect for our family and we’re pretty excited. Signing off for now, as I sit on the sectional and slowly slump into perfect television watching position. Buh bye!
