Drink of the Week: The Fitzgerald

IMG_4117

Alcohol might have led to F. Scott Fitzgerald’s downfall, but it would be hard to pass up a cocktail like the Fitzgerald on a warm summer day/night. A new discovery of mine, the Fitzgerald is a simple gin cocktail that screams of a summer with Gatsby. The Great Gatsby is one of my all time favorite novels so when I stumbled upon the Fitzgerald, I knew this was a drink I was going to have to at least try. Well ladies and gentlemen, I am two drinks in (about to craft a third) and while it definitely won’t be replacing my go to gin & tonic, it is a great addition to any summer drink guide. With bold lemon flavor and definite hints of Angostura bitters, this cocktail is set to please everyone and as you’ll see below, is a rather simple cocktail to concoct.

Official Recipe:

1.5 oz. gin
1 oz. simple syrup
.75 oz. lemon juice
2 dashes Angostura Bitters

Combine gin, simple syrup and lemon juice with ice in a cocktail shaker, shake vigorously, and strain into a rocks glass filled with ice. Add bitters. Garnish with a piece of lemon peel if you’re feeling Gatsby. The drink should have a nice pinkish-orange shade. Customize the flavor to your personal taste by adding less lemon juice or more bitters.

In fact, about 80,000 people in the US die every year from alcohol use by themselves or others. Forget guns, street drugs and war; none kill as many as alcohol. Not to mention the 15 million people in the US who are dependent on it.

Tom Stringham- I’m not sure how your comment is relevant to this post? It’s just a post about a drink that looks delicious by the way. I’ll have to try it!
