What fall looks like is different depending on where you live. I’ve heard areas on the east coast have already seen lower temps and even some rain. I’ve read that the Pacific Northwest has crisp cool breezes and somewhat sunny days. For me in Southern California, I’m experiencing cooler, gloomy mornings and warm, borderline hot, afternoons. Regardless of where you’re at, it’s time to pack up your shorts and start incorporating some good old-fashioned layering. The transition to fall can be a bit confusing but here are a few of my favorite tips I find helpful during this time of year.

Incorporate Layers

Layering is key to surviving any transition period. A light sweater or jacket is perfect for the fall transition. Cool mornings, the sun setting earlier than usual and stray rain clouds can make the day seem like a weather rollercoaster. Keeping light layers on hand make it easy to combat the temperature changes. Add the layer when you need it but if you end up needing to shed it you won’t be hauling around a heavy coat or thick sweater.

Fall Footwear

What you’ve got on your feet is a great way to quickly take an outfit from summer to fall. It’s time to put away any open-toed footwear and your summer sneakers. I love this time of year because it just makes so much more sense to pick up a monk strap or boot. I went with these black monk straps from Rockport because, for one, they are so comfortable which is obviously important. Also, they add just the right amount of sophistication which in turn takes a simple jeans and tee-shirt look from summer to fall. All by simply switching the footwear. It can still be casual but it’s seasonally appropriate which is key to coming off as a stylish gent. One other thing about footwear. This is the time of year when I start to incorporate more socks into looks. No shows are great but as the weather starts to cool down a bit, keep those ankles warm.

Choose Colors Wisely

Who doesn’t love a rich fall color palette? I sure do. I love maroons, any shade of brown, olives, deep navy… the list goes on and on. Oh, mustard! I love mustard even though it has a tendency to look awful on me. While all of these colors are great, it’s barely the beginning of fall so you don’t need to walk out of the house freshly decked out in every deep tone you own. Dress smart. Stick with a lighter color palette but combine colors creatively. Take the look above; it incorporate light tan and white but I added a darker shade of denim and black shoes to signal that transition to a cooler time.

These are some super simple ways to start the transition to fall. Got your own tips that you live by this time of year? Have any other questions? Let me know in the comments below!
