It seems there’s a national “day” for almost everything nowadays. That being said, who wouldn’t be on board with National Watermelon Day (Wednesday, August 3rd)? I love watermelon and pretty much always go for anything watermelon flavored. Remember watermelon Jolly Ranchers? Those were my favorite! And grape. Well, and I loved the apple. Then for a while they did a fire flavor which was hot cinnamon so that was good too. I digress… I love watermelon and I’m thrilled there’s a whole day to celebrate it! That’s why I came up with this watermelon cocktail recipe.
I recently had an amazingly refreshing cocktail at a restaurant that showcased the fruity freshness of watermelon and I had to take a stab at creating a simpler version to enjoy at home. Hence, this Watermelon Smash cocktail recipe. It is nothing but fresh fruit and herbs, with a little tequila, so it’s a great alternative for those trying to cut out added sugars and over processed additives. Plus, watermelon is 91% water so this cocktail is sure to keep you hydrated while you sip which is great for those prone to nasty hangovers (points to self).
Smashed Watermelon Cocktail Recipe (makes 2)
Freshly squeezed lime juice (1 lime)
3 shots Tequila Blanco (I used Tequila Partida)
- Blend 3 cups of cubed watermelon and strain large chunks out. Some pulp is okay.
- In a cocktail shaker combine ice, tequila, lime juice and watermelon puree. Shake until outside of shaker is icy (about 20 seconds).
- In your glasses, muddle a few mint leaves. Add additional ice and pour cocktail over top. Garnish with a lime wheel.
