The Negroni: Gin’s Old Fashioned

Not a fan of whiskey? I’m not either. Side Note: I did recently have a pretty amazing blueberry whiskey smash recently so I might be changing my tune on whiskey in the near future. Regardless, those looking for a cocktail that captures the essence of an Old Fashioned, the Negroni is the perfect cocktail for you. And better yet, it’s even easier to concoct than an Old Fashioned.Hendricks Negroni 2

Here’s why this cocktail is definitely worth working in to your drinking routine (yes, if you’re as serious as I am about booze you have what is called a “routine”). I get bored with drinks sometimes and like to cycle through different cocktails every so often to add some variety to my life. Tell me if this has ever happened to you… You come home from a long day at work and are in the mood to try something new, so you sit down with your laptop or tablet and search for a cocktail recipe that seems to fit your fancy (I usually hit up Pinterest because I need a picture to whet my appetite). You end up finding something that looks amazing but realize you don’t have any rosemary simple syrup in the fridge or any small batch gin that’s squeezed from juniper berries that are grown on a sheer cliff in Norway (that’s probably made up but it’s not far from a true situation). So long story even longer, that is why a cocktail like the Negroni is perfect. It is made up of ingredients any self-respecting home bar should contain: your favorite gin, sweet vermouth, and Campari.

COCKTAIL RECIPE

Equal parts gin (in this case, my favorite, Hendricks), sweet vermouth, and Campari. Fill a glass with ice, pour equal parts of each into your glass and give it a gentle stir to mix it all together. And that’s it. The Campari gives it a blast of grapefruit bitterness which balances out the sweetness of the sweet vermouth. And then you’ve got the floral notes of the gin and it’s just amazing. For the cocktail enthusiast, twist an orange peel and add to your glass for a little added citrus burst and garnish.
