GROOMING STYLE

Grooming Tips: Hair 101

I’ve often been asked how I get my hair to do what it does (I can get a good 6 inches of height on a good day). And while it’s not rocket science, it has definitely been years of trial and error to come up with what I think is a relatively painless hair grooming system.  Hair Tips 4

I’m always looking for a quicker, better, more efficient way to keep myself groomed and presentable. So a while back when I heard that it could actually be beneficial to wash your hair less often I had to give it a try. Now at first I was wary considering that my hair, like my skin, can get very oily. So I expected to have the greasiest hair and attract all sorts of attention the first day I opted out of shampoo. It took about a week or so for my hair to adjust to the new routine and for my scalp to stop producing excess sebum (the oil produced to keep your hair moisturized and waterproof), but after about a week my hair was used to not getting washed daily.

Hair Tips

I have found that cutting the shampoo out of my daily routine and simply lightly conditioning on a daily basis has allowed for more flexibility with my hair. I can get it to do whatever I want which leads to an easier routine and less fighting with it in the morning. It took some more experimenting but I finally landed on a flexible (because I sometimes forget) shampoo schedule of washing ever 3rd day. I’ve found the only way I’m able to get away with this lackadaisical grooming technique is to: 1) Use water-based styling products and; 2) I use conditioner on a daily basis to gently remove some of the build up and freshen my hair a bit. If you’re going to try cutting shampoo out of your daily routine start out slow and skip a day and work up to a schedule to results in hair that is pliable and willing to do what you want without feeling greasy and overly dirty (some dirt is good).

Another key tip that I have found has led to better hair days is combining products to fit my hair. I have literally tried around 50 different hair styling products in my lifetime and the day that I combined two of my favorites to create my own personalized hair cocktail was one of the happiest days of my life (dramatic?). Regardless, I run some American Crew forming cream through when it’s still very wet and then take a hair dryer to it. I don’t know what it is about guys that makes them afraid to use hair dryers, but they are the only way you can achieve some styles that require height and volume so get used to them. Cavemen invented fire for a reason… To finish, I run some Baxter of California hard cream pomade through the top to keep it in place all day without leaving a shiny finish. And that’s that. It sounds complicated but it’s actually really simple and it’s made a huge impact on my style as a whole. Test it out and let me know your results! Hair Tips 2

Great tips! My hair tends to be oily if I didn’t wash it daily.
Maybe I should start slow by leaving shampoo once a week. 🙂
    Thanks.
