Your entryway is the first impression that friends, family, guests and visitors see of your house. And your house says a lot about your style and your entryway should let your guests know right away that not only do you give a damn about your house, but you have a distinct style. Whatever your approach to decorating, pack a punch with some of these easy entry tips.
Surface
Having a surface, whether it’s a table or simply a shelf, will give you a place to put keys, mail and anything else that belongs near your door. This natural-looking entryway featured on Pure Home uses an awesome rustic table which provides personality and catches your eye as you enter. Not only does it look great, but it’s practical too.
Catch All
In my opinion every entryway needs a catch all. Something to throw that change that magically appears in your pocket or that mint from the Chinese restaurant–whatever it is, throw it in the catch all. Or make it the home for your mail key or a spare car key. Use this container to add a little personality. Use that bowl you brought back from a trip, that box you loved at a thrift store, or go out and buy these awesome Wood Egg Bowls from West Elm. These eggs are a great way to have a catch all without the chaos (psst, they’re on sale for $9.99 right now).
Mirror
Every entryway needs a mirror. My wife and I added one to our small apartment entryway and it has definitely come in handy. On those rushed mornings when I can barely get out the door in the morning, it lets me make sure I did my hair, and that breakfast isn’t covering my face. Guests will appreciate you having a mirror right inside the door–it will let them reassure themselves that they in fact do look as presentable as they did when they checked themselves over out in the car.
Art
Art is a great way to express your personality in your home. Put a great piece of art in your entryway and wham your entryway will pack a powerful, personal punch. Whether it’s a small framed photo or a bold graphic print, art is a welcoming touch to any entryway and will make any guests feel welcome.
PERsonal style
Perhaps the most important thing to make sure is included in your entry (and the most simple) is some personal flavor. Your entryway should immediately give visitors a sense of your personal taste. Color is a great way to let your personal style shine through so try painting your entry wall. Have a favorite photo? Frame it and include it. I for one, love succulents so right now our entryway features a lovely little guy (in a Mercury glass votive that my wife loves). We decided to go simple with our entryway because it is so near the rest of our living space which is overstimulatingly bright and colorful.
Looking for a little home upgrade? Start small and take on your entryway. Whether it’s as small as mine or as grand as some of the photos featured in this post, your entry speaks volumes about your home and your style. Don’t take it too seriously and have fun with it! Remember, this is your style, so do what you want.
