HOW TO: Style for Spring

GQ recently released their 5 Trends Making a Comeback This Spring in a uncharacteristically information-less article. Check it out… I was so confused when I saw it because it has little to no information regarding these 5 things they say are a must for this spring.

Never fear for I am addicted to online shopping/shopping in general and I have done the work for anyone that is interested in knowing any details and places to buy these 5 springtime styles.

1) The Panama Hat

Panama Hats

The Panama Hat dates back to the 17th century, gaining popularity during the California Gold Rush. However, it was lifted to iconic status when President Theodore Roosevelt wore one on his visit to the Panama Canal in 1904. Since then these lightweight, brimmed beauties have shaded the brow of many a stylish gentleman including Ernest Hemingway and Paul Newman. Authentic Panama Hats tend to be woven entirely by hand in Ecuador from palm fronds meaning that each one is special and unique. These hats give women a boyish twist to any outfit and acts as the stylish topper to any Spring/Summer look.

2) The Plaid Sport Coat

This classically cool prepster look is in this spring. Dating back to the ivy league college kids of the 50s and 60s, this spring trend can be carried out in a variety of ways. You can keep it simple and stick with a gray/beige glen plaid that will undoubtedly coordinate with almost every shirt you own (not to mention your new Panama Hat). Or you could live a little and embrace your inner dandy and go with one of the many colorful printastic versions on the market. Whether you go for practicality or for print, you’ll definitely be styling this spring with a plaid sport coat.

3) The Leather Jesus Sandal

Jesus Sandals

Now I should start by saying that my wife already put her foot down on this spiritual-inspired spring trend. That’s not to say I won’t be following they Lord Almighty on this trend but I’m more of a leather flip flop kind of guy; that is if I wear a sandal at all. I never caught on to the So Cal Rainbow flip flop fanaticism and I tend to wear a Sperry or Jack Purcell in the warmer months anyways. However, if I do in fact look to the sky for guidance regarding my spring style I may be trying the above out.

4) The Hawaiian Shirt

Hawaiian shirts

No trend both excites and scares me more than this one. I fear that when the, how shall I put this, older male population finds out about the return of the Hawaiian shirt they will immediately grab their Hawaiian shirts featuring golf clubs, hula dancers and sports teams. I will just tell you right now, this article was vague but I can guarantee with almost absolute certainty that is not what they meant. I myself am a huge fan of vintage Hawaiian shirts. I have picked up a few in thrift stores in the area and live in them in the warmer months. High and low end retailers alike have tagged along on this tropical trend–I picked up a few very affordable Hawaiian shirts at Old Navy last year. Loving (and hating) this trend for all the right reasons.

5) Leather Biker Jeans

Not one part of me wants to get in on this trend so I’m not even going to write about it. If you find yourself so inclined to partake in this “spring” trend, check out your local All Saints.

There they are–GQ’s 5 Trends Making a Comeback This Spring. Be free and spring style!
